International School Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC) in Vietnam is a founding member of The Mekong River International Schools Association.
The Mekong River International Schools Association (MRISA) promotes inter-school activities and competitions for students in the Middle and High Schools. These include sporting tournaments, cultural exchanges and leadership conferences. Students travel to other schools in the region or host visiting students from participating schools.
MRISA is an association of eight international schools in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand: Saigon South International School (SSIS), Hanoi International School (HIS), United Nations International School Hanoi (UNIS), Vientiane International School (VIS), International School Phnom Penh (ISPP), Northbridge International School Cambodia (NISC), International School Eastern Seaboard (ISE) and International School Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC).
The MRISA Leadership Conference brings together young leaders from the region. The conference focuses on providing students with the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills through various workshops and activities.
The MRISA Cultural Exchange is a 3 day event that occurs once per year and involves all 8 schools in the Mekong Region International School Association.
Each year the event occurs at a different time, depending on what is happening in any given year! Each MRISA school is able to take 14 enthusiastic and creative students from Grades 6-11 to the event. At ISHCMC, students must apply to participate in the event and answer a series of questions. I will advertise the event at assembly and through the school bulletin so you will know when you should apply. Students that have proven a great deal of participation in extra curricula Arts events have an advantage, so it's important that you show your commitment to the Arts to be eligible. Students that enjoy or excel in the Visual Arts, Music, Performing Arts, Dance and Film should apply to attend. We look to take a balance of students that enjoy the Performing Arts and Visual Arts so that we are able to showcase the talent that we have at this school.
If you are selected as one of the 14 students, you will also be required to design and choreograph a performance with the other 13 students and perform it to the other students and schools attending the event. This performance therefore requires commitment of time leading up to the event so that the performance is polished .
Each year, one of the MRISA school's host the event and decide on a major theme and focus for the Cultural Exchange. Students have the opportunity to sign up for workshops that they wish to get involved in, as well as some workshops that maybe compulsory for all students to partake. Teachers from the MRISA schools teach various workshops, as well as guest experts, cultural groups and creative types.
This once a year event is a fantastic opportunity for you to develop your skills, meet like minded students from our region and experience the Arts in ways that you have not perhaps had the opportunity to do so previously!
Like all MRISA events, you will be hosted by families from the host school. Students are able to interact socially with their peers and appreciate the talent that other students from our region display in the Arts to help them grow. It is a positive, rewarding and beneficial experience for ISHCMC students as their confidence grows. I feel very fortunate to co-ordinate this event and urge other students to get involved in the future. All students that are fortunate enough to be selected have thoroughly enjoyed the MRISA Cultural Exchange and we strongly encourage you to get involved when the time arises!
